After an apparent clash with Valencia player, Jeison Murillo, Ronaldo was sent off in his first champion league game. This means that the football god may miss Man Utd return.
Roughly 29 minutes into the Champions League Group H opener against Valencia, Ronaldo appeared to make contact with Murillo’s head in an off-the-ball incident.
The pair had come together with Murillo hitting the deck, and Ronaldo reaching down to make brief contact as he passed by the downed defender.
It was the first red card ever in his 154th appearance in Champions league.
The expulsion, therefore sheds more light on Juventus’ disciplinary record in European competition.
Ronaldo’s sending off was the Italians’ 26th in the Champions League, the highest of any team recorded in the tournament’s history.
The turn out of events means Ronaldo will miss the next game, Juventus’ home match against Young Boys, and maybe their.trip to Old Trafford to play against his former club Manchester United, although that will be UEFA’s Disciplinary Body’s decision to make.
The UEFA regulations state: “As a rule, a player who is sent off the field of play is suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition (i.e. UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League or UEFA Super Cup). In case of serious offences, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment, including by extending it to other competitions.”
They managed to triumph in Valencia without him, thanks to two penalties from Miralem Pjanic, but this was a timely reminder that when it comes to Ronaldo, who has now been sent off 11 times in his career, one must take the rough with the smooth.
