Antimalarial drug Chloroquine Phosphate has a certain curative effect on the Coronavirus – #COVID19, Chinese experts confirmed based on the results of the clinical trials, according to an official on Monday.
In a report available online quoting Sun Yanrong, the deputy head of the China National Center for Biotechnology Development under the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Chloroquine Phosphate was selected from tens of thousands of existing drugs after multiple rounds of screening.
According to her, Chloroquine has been under clinical trials in over 10 hospitals in Beijing, Guangdong Province, and central China’s Hunan Province, and it has shown fairly good efficacy. In the trials done, patients who had taken the drug have shown better results than others.
Resolution of fever, improvement of chest symptoms and CT scans of affected lungs, rise in the percentage of patients who became negative to tests, and improvement in the time they need to do so. Patients taking Chloroquine also take a shorter time to recover, she added.
An example is a 54-year-old patient in Beijing, who was admitted to the hospital four days after showing symptoms. After taking the drug for a week, he saw all indicators improve and the nucleic acid turn negative.
So far, no obvious serious adverse reactions related to the drug have been found among the over 100 patients enrolled in the clinical trials.
