Akwa Ibom Youths Protest to PHED Office with Coffin over Power Outage

Youths from Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, on Wednesday, led a protest to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) office in Uyo over power outage and outrageous billing.

The angry youths who marched to the PHED Edet Akpan Avenue office today in good numbers, carrying placards to drive home their demands, as the villages in the local government have been experiencing incessant power blackout for a long time.

Among their demands are; that the 19 villages which make up the area, be connected to the Afaha Ube Power Station so they can experience constant power supply.

Others include a rejection of the 3 days monthly rotation of electricity supply, and providing them with prepaid metres, adding that no more outrageous billing in the area will be condoned.

At the PHED office, the youths dropped a coffin, with a plantain stock on it (ayie in Ibibio), is known to be some sort of traditional injunction to serve as a warning, which could be disastrous to any of the PHED staff.

No official statement from the Power company as regards this protest.
