5 Lifestyle Changes and Habits You Should Consider While Approaching 40

Life they say begins at 40. But the human body experiences changes once a person begins to approach a certain age; as a baby, teenager, and even a 40 year adult.. Aging which many fret about, comes with lots of health challenges as the body begins to drop in optimal performance unlike during its youthful days.

According to advice by medical experts, once a person begins approaching age 40, he or she is supposed to make lifestyle changes; dropping certain old habits and adopting new ones. This will definitely help put the body in shape in other for anyone to continue enjoying his or her life; work, family etc. Yes, life begins at 40 only if you can take proper care of yourself.

Below are some lifestyle changes and habits you should consider when hitting the 4.0 level.

Most people take the consumption of alcoholic beverages as a sport and the easiest way to unwind, have and get relief from stress. Note that taking alcohol is not bad, but excessive intake can have a very disastrous effect on vital organs of the body i.e liver, kidney, heart, brain and even the eyes. Many indulge in heavy drinking which takes away their appetite for food and reduction in water consumption, denying the body of important nutrients and minerals.
As you age, your body’s ability to process alcohol changes. Because your system doesn’t work as well (when you’re older), you are likely to end up with higher blood alcohol levels than you would have when you were much younger.
By age 40, your liver has built up fatty tissue that makes it tougher for the organ to process the nutrients that will counteract alcohol consumption. Alcoholic liver disease or cirrhosis affect mostly middle-aged men with heavy drinking habits.
If you continue heavily drinking between say 40 and 55, the fat and inflammation creates scar tissue and the liver shrinks. So to avoid this, keep a balanced consumption of alcohol and water.

Exercising can be challenging for many, especially when considering their busy schedule and there are lots of bills to pay. Hence, money has to be made – paramount, thereby relegating exercising to the background as less important or trivial.
Truth be told, the benefits of exercising are enormous! Regular exercising controls weight, promotes better sleep, combats health conditions and diseases which are likely to start showing up when a person is hitting 40. They include stroke, high blood pressure, various types of cancer, Type 2 diabetes, depression etc.

Check ups
When it comes to medical check-ups, many have fallen short of it in this part of the world – Nigeria to be precise! You get to hear people knock off an advice suggesting that they go for checks ups or tests, but they would rather take pills off the counter without proper prescription by an expert.
It is common place for people to say malaria is just a common thing to affect anyone and ignore the symptoms, thereby delaying treatment for a long time. Then when it knocks them down, they struggle to catch their breath. Sadly, many have met untimely deaths because of this practice.
The funny thing is that most of the time, tests or check-ups are not expensive except on extreme health cases. As one approaching 40 years (from age 36), check your blood sugar and blood pressure often. The good this is, these tests are easily done at big pharmacies at very low amount of money.

Good Diet has a lead role to play in the general wellbeing of the body, but for many it seems not to be bothered. Eating healthy is important in all the age groups but it’s more important when you approach 40, because the older you get the lesser the body metabolism, implying that foods or drinks that your body will normally break down faster will be slowed down due to age. This it is encouraged to eat a variety of fruits, stick to fat-free or low fat diary foods, avoid soda drinks, use healthy oils in cooking and your body will thank you for it.


Maintaining a healthy diet can be very expensive especially in a country like Nigeria and as such supplements are recommended. Many people don’t need to take nutritional supplements as they can get all vitamins and minerals they want from what they eat, but what of those that can all the nutrients they want from food atleast the basic ones, they need supplements. Supplements though important can also be detrimental in some health conditions. Thus before you get any supplements, even the so called basic ones such as Vitamin C, ensure to consult your Pharmacist or Doctor before getting them. This is so because supplements contain vitamins and minerals which interacts with some health conditions or drugs used for some health conditions. For example Vitamin C interacts negatively with deferoxamine a drug used to treat iron poisoning.

Age 40 is the new 20 and that means you are just starting and this comes with certain changes in the body, hence you should mind your diet. This is because eating certain types of food, especially those fatty one and high in sugar composition puts your body at a high risk.
You will need to eat healthy, taking few alcoholic beverages, avoid soda drinks and take plenty of water to help stave off the scourges of obesity, high cholesterol, High BP and diabetes.
