The current governor of Akwa Ibom State and flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, , Mr. Udom Emmanuel, and the candidate for the All Progressives Congress in the State, Obong Nsima Ekere, were absent from the BBC ‘Pidgin’ Governorship Debate held in Uyo.
According to the BBC Pidgin Service, the candidates dropped out of the debate at the last minute for various reasons. Mr. Udom Emmanuel had told the BBC that he wouldn’t make it again, travelling on the eve of the debate due “grave issues of the State” that needed urgent attention. For Obong Ekere the NDDC boss, he demanded for a new date for the debate to hold because of an important meeting he had to attend.
BBC Pidgin Service, Organizers went ahead with the debate held at the New Lecture Theatre, University of Uyo, Uyo. It featured four candidates from the Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party (ANRP) – Mr. Iboro Otu, Young Democratic Party (YDP) – Mr Ezikiel Nya Etok, Young Progressives Party (YPP) – Nature Udoh and Ekong Eyo of the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP).
Questions fielded during the debate included rural development, employment, minimum wage, education and even security.
