A heavy explosion suspected to be caused by an Asteroid has rocked Akure, the Ondo State capital in the early hours of Saturday, destroying buildings within the vicinity and divided the Owo-Akure road.
The Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu confirmed the explosion on Twitter, saying he was headed to the “scene to assess” the situation and urged citizens to remain calm.
I’ve been briefed by security agencies in the state concerning the loud blast that was heard in Akure. I will be at the scene to assess on the advise of heads of our security agencies.
I ask that all citizens remain calm as we ascertain details of the incidence.

Properties destroyed in the earth-shaking explosion include a church, a boarding school, filling station and residential buildings, leaving many injured.

The site of the explosion is reportedly less than a kilometre to Akure Airport.
