Salaries of Political Appointees Slashed by 20% in Akwa Ibom State

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel

The Akwa Ibom State government has slashed the salaries of its political appointees by 20% following the coronavirus pandemic which has badly hit the global economy, causing the crash in the price of crude oil globally.

This decision was announced by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem on Tuesday in a press release, stating that “the Governor was confronted with an urgent need to take the decision” to navigate Akwa Ibom out of the current economic situation.

The State government says “the 20% pay cut would be spread over a period of time pending the return of crude oil price to normalcy in the global market.”

This decision comes shortly barely two weeks after the establishment of the Akwa Ibom State Post COVID-19 Economic Reconstruction Committee by the Governor, to recommend navigable routes for the State out of the current global economic crisis.
