The national leader of the All Progressive Party (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, said his statement advising the Federal Government to recruit 50 million youths into the army, was said in error.
The statement, which was made at the 12th colloquium organized to celebrate his 69th birthday in Kano State, was met with enthusiasm and humour by Nigerians on social media, especially Twitter. According to Mr Tinubu, “Recruit 50 million youths into the army,” he stated, adding that “what they will eat —cassava, corn, yam, will grow here.”
Tunde Rahman, a spokesperson to Tinubu, in a statement on Tuesday said, “The 50 million was an accidental verbal mistake of which we all commit from time to time especially when reciting a series of large numerical figures.”
The statement went further to state that the former governor of Lagos, meant to say that the government should employ 50,000 youths, as a method of tackling unemployment and the rising insecurity, growing in the country.
