Fire Outbreak hits Imo’s Sam Mbakwe International Airport

The Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Owerri, the Imo State capital has been hit by a fire outbreak on Monday.

The incidence took place at the arrival terminal of the cargo airport. According to eyewitness reports, “It started around 2:10 pm and raged for 50 minutes. It damaged equipment and infrastructure, but the rescue work assisted in salvaging the situation.”


The fire outbreak was confirmed by Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu, General Manager, Corporate Affairs on behalf of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria in Press Release shared on the agency’s official Twitter Account. It reads.

@FAAN_Official wishes to inform passengers and the general public that there was a fire incident that affected some parts of the terminal building of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri at about 1400hours today.

The fire was however curtailed swiftly by officers of the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services Department of FAAN.
There was no casualty and normal operations has since commenced at the airport.

The Authority has commenced preliminary investigations into the cause of the incident.
