Champions League winners, Chelsea secured victory against opponents and Europa League winners, Villareal, in penalties during Wednesday’s UEFA Supercup match played in Belfast.
The Blues finally secured the Supercup after three attempts, previously losing to both Bayern in 2013 and Liverpool in 2019 on penalties.
Thomas Tuchel’s side took an early lead through a goal from Hakim Ziyech, who went off injured, but couldn’t keep out the Villareal press and were eventually punished by a second-half equaliser from Gerard Moreno to take the game into extra time.
Both sides failed to convert their chances during the 30 minutes of extra time and the game went on to be determined by penalties, with Chelsea goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga who came on as a substitute in the 119th minute, emerging shootout hero with two penalty saves.
Chelsea returns to action in the English Premier League with a home game on Saturday against Crystal Palace.
