Students of the Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Ikot Akpaden in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of the State against all odds protested over the tuition fee hike in the institution by the management.
The students on Monday 12 July 2021, began an expression of their displeasure at the school gate, blocking access to motorists into the main campus with tyres and tree branches. They were also seen carrying cardboard with the inscription “We say no to school fee increment.”
At lunchtime, they also prepared a local delicacy at the gate which was served to all students who participated in the protest.
The management of AKSU had earlier announced a new fee for the students, from N53, 000 for the indigenous students to N103, 000 and from N73, 000 to N133, 000 for non-indigenes.
Vice-Chancellor of The Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Prof Nse Essien was also barred from entering the school campus by the protesting students, insisting he addressed them under the rain over the recent hike in school fees.
Asides from the fee hike, Akwa Ibom State University has been under the spotlight in recent months over salary-related issues of its academic and non-academic staff. This resulted in an industrial action for several weeks.
