Cross River State Confirms Justice Akon Ikpeme as Chief Judge

The government of Cross River has conferred the position of substantive Chief Judge of the state in Justice Akon Ikpeme after the National Judicial Council (NJC) failed to extend the tenure of Justice Eyo Effiom who served in acting capacity.

The National Judicial Council (NJC) had earlier recommended Justice Ikpeme for the position of Chief Judge, but she was denied the position, stating security risks as the reason, due to her original state of origin being Akwa Ibom even though she is married to a Cross Riverian and has grown through the state service.

According to reports, the House received a communication from the Governor, Prof Ben Ayade to confirm Justice Akon Ikpeme. “The House has received a communication from the Governor and we shall go ahead to confirm her as the substantive Chief Judge of the State Tomorrow.”

Justice Ikpeme would be confirmed Chief Judge, after she first appeared before the state House of Assembly on March 2, 2020, when her confirmation was first rejected.
