Uyo, the capital city of Akwa Ibom State has overtime been on the lenses of the media as a technology ecosystem for young tech innovators and enthusiasts who are doing the most to put the city on the map.
Perhaps, the narrative that states that the future is Digital has been the talking point of several tech conferences across Nigeria, and the city of Uyo, known to be the tech start- up capital of Nigeria has not been left behind in this drive and narrative.
In the last couple of years, there have been lots of innovation hubs across the state that took it upon themselves; to create platforms that bring together young people who are interested in technology, to learn, collaborate and inspire each other. Top on the list of these technology hubs in Uyo putting the city on the map is Start Innovation Hub, an ICT incubation centre that helps start-ups to start up faster in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria.
Recently, Start Innovation Hub, enrolled over hundred youths in Akwa Ibom State to partake in Project Create, an ICT training and placement programme aimed at creating jobs for the youth populace, thereby making them self-reliant and productive.
The programme which was mainly tech related had courses such as: Android Development, Web Development, Digital Marketing, Blogging, Hardware Repairs and Maintenance, Graphics Design, Hardware and IOT, Video Editing and Motion graphics.
As you may know, the foremost tech companies in the world, IBM, Google, Microsoft, etc., no longer require college Degree as a prerequisite for employment; rather they pay attention to young talents armed with 21st century digital skills. So the idea of Project Create designed to empower young people in Akwa Ibom State with digital skills come to play as an initiative that has been able to change the Narrative of ICT and youth Development in Akwa Ibom State.
Nkiru, a young graduate and job seeker who enrolled in the Digital Marketing class resounded her project Create experience, stating that the programme has been the turning point of her life; in the sense that she has been opened to a new world of practical learning and opportunities in the digital marketing industry.
19 years old, Victory, an indigene of Akwa Ibom State who enrolled for the Web Development class, without any previous knowledge in Web, recounted that with what has been taught so far since she began the programme, she’s been able to build website on her own using PHP, LARAVEL and CSS.
It is pertinent to note that building a vibrant economy for job security and human empowerment will mean creating an enabling environment and platforms for our teeming youths to take advantage; and one of such platform is Project Create programme powered by Start Innovation Hub.
