The Member representing Etinan/Nsit Ibom/Nsit Ubium Federal Constituency in the House of Reprsentatives, Hon. Onofiok Luke has called on the Judiciary to make provision for the creation of a Division of the Appeal Court in Akwa Ibom State in its 2021 budget.
Hon. Luke made the call at the joint session of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters during the 2020 Budget Defence by the Judiciary. He said that bulk of cases handled by the calabar Division of the Appeal Court emanates from Akwa Ibom State, a development which he described as cumbersome for litigants and lawyers from Akwa Ibom owing to the numerous difficulties encountered especially in accessing Cross River State presently in view of dilapidating road infrastructure.
The lawmaker who also chairs the Committee on Judiciary added that the Legislature will support the Judiciary to ensure that Judges dispense judgement without fear or favour and maintained that together with the Judiciary, they will evolve a mechanism to ensure that court orders are obeyed.
The Joint session was chaired by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Sen. Bamidele Opeyemi and co-chaired by Chairman, House Committee on FCT Judiciary, Hon. Ifeanyi Chudimomah and Chairman, House Committee on Judiciary, Hon. Onofiok Luke.
In a related development, Hon. Luke joined members of the House Committee on Judiciary together with the growing voices of eminent Nigerians to condemn in strong terms the abduction of Justice Abdul Dogo of the Federal High Court, Akure, Ondo State by unknown gunmen recently.
He lamented that the abduction of Justice Dogo was not only yet another sad occurrence in the nation’s history but had the remote tendency to threaten the core foundation of our judicial system.
He commended security agencies for ensuring the release of Justice Dogo and urged them to step up their preventive and combative strategies of crime fighting across the country.
He assured the Judiciary that the Committee will always support them to enthrone an effective judicial system for the nation while dropping the hint that together with the Judiciary, the committee would determine if there is need to establish a special law enforcement arm within the Police Force to ensure prompt dispensation of justice.
