Nollywood screen siren, Sylvia Edem is suing for peace in Nigeria as she embarks on her new pet project – Nigeria Peace Project. The Nigerian Peace Project is a “Door to Door Peace Advocacy” initiated by Sylvia Edem Foundation.
The Akwa Ibom indigene who is also a former miss Nigeria made this known at the official unveiling of the project at a press briefing in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State Capital.
In a release made available, Ms Edem said that the Nigerian Peace Project is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals of Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, the project is equipped with the responsibility of raising one million peace ambassadors across the nation in a bid to reduce violence, crime and destruction of lives and property.
She went further to pay tribute to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency Mr. Udom Emmanuel – a man whose principal task of making Akwa Ibom State one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria is worthy of note, today we can boldly say that Governor Udom Emmanuel is a key player in the promotion and sustenance of peace and security in this part of the country.
“In the recent past, never has the need for sustainable peace been so strong and critical in our nation. It is on record that between 2007 and 2017, more than 150,000 Nigerians have been killed by attacks related to ethnic, religious and political violence. Between this span of time more than 3.2 Million people have been displaced from their homes. Today, more than 6 Million Nigerians are currently starving and battling for survival due to insurgency and other related crisis. Out of this number, women and children are the highest casualties clocking over 72 percent of those killed, maimed and displaced”.
In advocacy of a peaceful and habitable nation, the Nigerian Peace Project is flagging off a movement to bring the message of peace to every doorstep. Proposed to hold nationwide, it is aimed at building national peace and unity, using the youths as drivers of the peace crusade. This nation building project presents a perfect opportunity for young people to take a front seat in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations, towards the transformation of the Nigerian nation from a chaotic hub to an umbrella of love, peace and unity.
“It also hopes to engage the public and mobilize action by encouraging ordinary citizens, policy makers, social institutions and government to embrace an organized action plan where none is available. More so, create and raise public awareness that peace-consciousness can promote the social wellbeing of the people, Strengthen social norms and cultural values that point in the direction of peace awareness in everyday action and decision making and Propagate innovative ideas and positive thinking to reduce crime and combat social vices and corruption”.
The Door to Door Peace Advocacy shall cover several categories of youth conscription and sustainable development goals through social events, dialogue, workshops, skill acquisition training and empowerment programs.
It will equally celebrate, recognize and promote outstanding peace pilots in the country including individuals, NGOs, industry operators, private sector executives and government.
With our social media hashtags, #Naijapeacewaka and #greenerpeacerally we hope to stimulate active participation in this project while also boasting our peer-to-peer relationship within the online community and promote unity across tribes and ethnicities especially with nationwide elections around the corner.
