Ibom Air to Commence Operation – Akan Okon, Akwa Ibom Commissioner for Aviation

The Commissioner for Special Duties and Aviation Development, Akan Okon has assured Akwa Ibom people that the State Airline, Ibom Air will commence operation very soon as 3 aircrafts had been procured by Akwa Ibom State government which two will arrive the state this week while the remaining one will arrive in second week of February.

Mr. Okon made this revelation at the ongoing Budget defence by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) at the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Committee on Finance and Appropriation. While highlighting the numerous projects his ministry has carried out in 2018, Mr. Okon intimated the Committee on the readiness by government to complete the MRA facilities at Obong Victor Attah International Airport and commence operation of Ibom Air to boost the state economy.

According to him, “we have paid for 3 aircraft and 2 will arrive the state next week while the remaining one will arrive on second week of February.”

Responding, the Chairman House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Rt. Hon. Usoro Akpanusoh thanked the Commissioner for the effort so far but appealed strongly that he should do everything possible to ensure that Four Point by Sheraton Hotel located at Ikot Ekpene should be put to use as more Akwa Ibom money has been invested in the project.

The Deputy Chairman of the Finance and Appropriation Committee and Member representing Ibiono Ibom State Constituency, Barr. Ime Okon demanded to know why Victor Attah International Airport is still being addressed as Ibom International Airport after the name has been changed. The Chief Whip of the Assembly, Hon. Emmanuel Ekpenyong and Deputy Whip, Rt. Hon. David Lawrence demanded for the reduction of airport fee which was initially N1000 but has been increased to N1500.

Addressing the concerns, Akan Okon said that the different federal government agencies like NCAA are responsible and all changes will be effected as soon as possible when all the requirements are met.
