Akwa Starlets of Uyo put up a good fight at home to earn a well-deserved victory against their Umuahia based neighbors, Abia Comets in an encounter which ended 2 – 1 in favor of the home side at the Training Pitch of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
Heading into the match, the Uyo based club was yet to win a game in the 2018/2019 Bet 9ja Nigerian National League season until on-loan Akwa United hit-man, Edem Akakatang converted from the spot in the thirtieth minute to gift the team their first win in a couple matches.
The penalty was awarded on the heels of a handball incident.
Five minutes after the restart, Wisdom Fernando added a gorgeous second, after reaching at the end of a loose ball inside the opposition box to unleash an unstoppable right-footed pile-drive which proved too strong for the fully-stretched arms of Comets’ goalkeeper, Kingsley Ogoke.
Barely seconds before the blast of the final whistle, the home side could not hold on to a clean sheet as the visitors pressed for a consolatory goal with defender Rafael Ademola scoring a beautiful screamer courtesy of shady defending.
The result takes Akwa Starlets to four points from two matches and Comets to three points having played three matches already.
Starlets will be visitors to Gateway United at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta next Saturday while Comets draw a bye on Match Day Four.
