Following the recent cases of earth tremors felt in some part of Abuja, the federal capital territory, The FCT Emergency Management Agency, (FEMA) has stated the possible causes and safety tips in case of a recurrence.
In a press statement signed by the Director General of FEMA, Abbas G. Idriss, it reads in part
“The possible cause of the earth shakings might be a result of Earth Tremor, a sign of seismic movement within the earth. This is caused by sudden breaks along a fault line which results in the sudden release of energy that makes the ground to shake. It is cause by stress in underground rocks and may be due to rock blasting and mining activities in an area.”
To stay save during the earth shaking, the Agency gave some safety tips:
“Stay calm and do not panic. If you stay in a building, locate a safe room, drop down and take cover under desks or tables and hold tight to it. You should stay away from windows and objects that may fall.”
“If you are outdoor, find a clear spot away from buildings, trees and power lines. If you are in the car, slow down and drive to a clear place, stay in the car until shakings stop.”
“There is nothing to panic as there is no likelihood of any earthquake disaster in Nigeria, as we are not in the earthquake zone”, he added.
Abuja residents are urged to calm down and be rest assured that the abnormal situation will soon stop and that FEMA is on top if the situation.
