Retired Professional Footballer George Weah Rumored Winner in Liberia’s Presidential Election

Retired footballer and the 1995 FIFA world player of the year, George Weah has been elected the as the 25th president of Liberia after securing of 12 out of the country’s 15 counties.

“I am deeply grateful to my family, my friends, and my loyal supporters who contributed to our campaign during this extremely long election season,” Weah said on Twitter just before the results were announced.

The ex-Liberian international defeated the incumbent vice president Joseph Boaki to assume the position. He will now succeed the first elected female president in Africa, economist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
