The Uyo Hub of the Global Shapers of the World Economic Forum officially launched the group and held its First Global Shapers Uyo Community Connect Meeting
In attendance were the first 15 shapers of the hub alongside; Mr. Aniefiok Iwa-Udofia – Special Assistant to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State on Youth Matters, The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Onofiok Luke & wife, Dr. (Mrs) Uduak Luke; the Special Assistant on Public Relations to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Raphael Edem and Mr.Prince Simeon – Media Personality.
At the event, the Uyo Hub adopted a community project under the Goal 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals, i.e. “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”
Shapers opted to support the improvement of educational standards in Akwa Ibom State by adopting an educational facility in each Senatorial District in Akwa Ibom State, and equipping same with essential curriculum books, student mentoring and ICT equipment’s to support continuous education for teachers in the State. The proposed project for the Uyo hub is expected to also include an e-learning portal where teachers will be furnished with several educational aids to improve their knowledge, skills, and effectiveness.
The ‘Education For Sustainable Development’ programme has been launched for students, supervisors and teachers to participate in the education challenge. Uyo is suffering from a reading crisis whose consequences we see and feel every day in this region. The result of falling behind in knowledge means falling behind in civilisation and intellect. Reading opens minds, magnifies hunger for knowledge, and instils the values of openness and moderation that define great civilizations. Children from Grade 1 to Grade 12 in schools across Akwa Ibom will be beneficiaries, which will run from October through to March each year.
The challenge also includes several rounds of evaluation and mentoring at the level of each school, educational zone, community, and finally Akwa Ibom state. It seeks to create a new generation with excellent reading skills and a thirst for knowledge.
The Uyo Hub of the Global Shapers community’s main desire is that one day, all Akwa Ibom students will be offered quality education in schools that offer a sustainable, safe and secure environment which encourages innovation and creativity amongst students. One day Akwa Ibom schools will have well- stocked libraries, science and IT labs, sports facilities and specialist spaces for music, art and drama.
